Fragrance by Mood: Scents for the Office, Date Night and Sunday Brunch
Seven Black-owned fragrances, sorted by where your day is taking you, from the first meeting to the last pour of the night.
By Black Beauty Founders Staff

Ask a Black woman about her perfume and you will rarely get just a name. You get a story: the scent she wore to the interview that changed everything, the one her grandmother kept on the dresser, the bottle she only opens when she means business.
The numbers say the same thing. A 2022 report from NPD Group, now part of Circana, found that more than 85% of Black and Hispanic consumers wear fragrance, compared with 78% of U.S. consumers overall, and more than 60% of both groups said they do not leave home without it. What has changed is how we wear it. One signature scent is giving way to a fragrance wardrobe, chosen by where you are going and how you want to feel when you get there. So we built yours around three moments, with every pick from a Black-owned fragrance house.
The Office, 9 a.m.
Polished and close to the skin. Nothing that walks into the conference room before you do.

Gold Standard by Influxious
Funmi Monet, our August cover star, calls this one confidence in a bottle. It is warm and luminous rather than loud, with bright Nigerian ginger and blood orange settling into saffron, caramel and amber. Wear it on the day of the big presentation. Her debut collection sold out at Sephora in six hours, so if you find it, take it as a sign.
Notes: blood orange, golden mango, Nigerian ginger, saffron, caramel, amber. Sold at Sephora.

Worthy by Moodeaux
Bright at first spray, then soft and steady, like a deep breath before you walk into the room. Brianna Arps built Moodeaux around self-expression and well-being, with vegan, cruelty-free and allergy-tested formulas. Moodeaux was the first Black-owned fragrance brand carried at Urban Outfitters and Credo Beauty.
Notes: white tea, orange blossom, vanilla woods, lavender.
Date Night, 8 p.m.
Warmer, deeper and made to be noticed across a candlelit table.

Little Black Dress by Parfums Du Ciel
Named for the one piece every woman owns for the nights that matter. Juicy lychee and blood orange open into jasmine and creamy caramel, then settle on vanilla, sandalwood and amber. It is rich and grown, never cute, the kind of scent people notice when you walk by. Tara McDaniel opened Parfums Du Ciel in Dallas' Deep Ellum in March 2026 as the city's first Black-owned fragrance house and parfum bar, where you can also blend a custom scent of your own.
Notes: lychee, blood orange, plum, jasmine, creamy caramel, vanilla, sandalwood, amber. Sold direct and at the Dallas parfum bar.

Dare by BROWN GIRL Jane
An homage to warm Havana nights. The fruit is ripe and playful at first, then melts into amber, soft leather and musk that stays close all evening. BROWN GIRL Jane was founded by sisters Malaika and Nia Jones with Tai Beauchamp, and the collection is clean, cruelty-free and vegan.
Notes: lychee, cherry, amber, leather, musk.

Duke by Harlem Perfume Co.
A tribute to Duke Ellington. Teri Johnson founded Harlem Candle Co. in 2014 and turned customer demand into a perfume line now sold at retailers including Nordstrom and Bluemercury. Duke was composed by perfumers Hamid Merati-Kashani and Ilias Ermenidis, and the bourbon honey dry down is pure jazz club. It is unisex, so share it or keep it all to yourself.
Notes: pink pepper, ginger zest, tobacco, lavender, bourbon honey, guaiacwood.
Sunday Brunch, 11 a.m.
Bright, social and a little indulgent, like the first sip of something sweet.

Nostalgia by Ourside
Dewy jasmine with a squeeze of grapefruit and mint, softened by vanilla and ylang ylang before cedar and amber warm it up. Keta Burke-Williams makes Ourside in small batches in the Bronx, and every scent is vegan and cruelty-free. It reads like a long brunch that turns into an afternoon on the patio.
Notes: mint, grapefruit, jasmine, ylang ylang, vanilla, cedar, amber.

She Was Here by FORVR Mood
Salted pistachio and vanilla milk make this the latte of the lineup, with a delicate rose to keep it pretty. Jackie Aina, a Nigerian-born Army veteran who has been creating beauty content since 2007, started FORVR Mood with fragrance first, and the bottle is inspired by her engagement ring. It is the scent that makes people ask who was just here.
Notes: roasted pistachio, Turkish rose, vanilla milk, warm amber. Sold at Sephora.
Make It Last All Day
Fragrance holds best on moisturized skin, so spray right after your body butter or oil. Aim for pulse points like the wrists, the base of the throat and behind the knees, and skip rubbing your wrists together, which can blur the top notes faster. For a scent that follows you, mist your scarf or the ends of your hair from a distance. And when you change the plan, change the bottle.
Your scent walks in first. Let it say exactly what you mean.
