The BBF Test: I Tried Bask & Lather’s New Scalp Therapy Collection

Shaina Rainford built Bask & Lather around healthier hair from the scalp up. I put the brand’s new five-piece Scalp Therapy Collection to The BBF Test.

There are a lot of hair products sitting in my bathroom.

Some I try once. Some are good, but not necessarily memorable. Every now and then, though, I find something that makes me stop and think, okay, I understand why people are talking about this.

Bask & Lather’s Scalp Therapy Collection falls into that last category.

I was already familiar with Shaina Rainford and the story behind Bask & Lather. What has always made the company interesting to me is that Shaina did not start with a trendy product idea and then build a story around it. The brand grew from a real hair and scalp concern in her own family, and that problem-solving mentality still shows up in the products. A former nurse practitioner, Shaina launched Bask & Lather in December 2020 and left her job in 2021 to run it full time. Read her BBF cover story.

The Scalp Therapy Collection feels like Bask & Lather taking that philosophy and going deeper. The five-piece system is built around a scalp-first wash routine and includes the Scalp Detox Exfoliating Serum, Scalp Soothing Pre-Shampoo, Scalp Balancing Shampoo, Scalp Restoring Conditioner and Scalp Moisturizing Leave-In Treatment.

Basically, your scalp is finally getting its own skin-care routine.

The first thing I noticed: it actually feels like a system

There is something satisfying about using products that make sense together. Instead of five bottles that happen to share the same packaging, each step has a job.

The Scalp Detox Exfoliating Serum is the reset button. It is designed to loosen stubborn buildup and get directly to the scalp, which matters because reaching the scalp without coating the rest of your hair can be half the battle.

Then comes the Scalp Soothing Pre-Shampoo, and I will say this: pre-shampoo treatments can sometimes feel like the extra wash-day step you swear you are going to do and then skip. This one makes a case for keeping the step.

What I appreciated about the collection overall is that cleansing is not treated as synonymous with stripping your hair. Especially with textured hair, there is always that balancing act. You want your scalp clean. You want buildup gone. But you do not want to finish wash day wondering where all your moisture went.

Then comes the good part

The Scalp Balancing Shampoo continues the scalp-focused approach, followed by the Scalp Restoring Conditioner and Scalp Moisturizing Leave-In Treatment. By the time I worked through the routine, what stood out most was how considered everything felt.

My hair felt clean, but it also felt cared for.

That distinction matters to me. I do not want the dramatic squeaky-clean feeling that leaves my hair practically announcing that every ounce of oil has left the building. I want my scalp refreshed. I want softness. I want moisture. I want manageability. And I do not want to spend the next several days trying to undo my wash day.

The Scalp Therapy Collection understood the assignment.

Scalp care is having its skin-care moment

One of the things I like most about the launch goes beyond the formulas. Beauty has spent years teaching consumers to understand the skin barrier, exfoliation, hydration, serums, actives and multi-step facial routines. Our scalps have not always received that same level of attention.

That is changing. Bask & Lather is making a smart play by treating scalp care as an actual category instead of one product buried inside a larger hair collection.

Healthy hair care should not begin halfway down the strand. It starts at the scalp.

So, does it pass The BBF Test?

Absolutely.

I think the sum of the routine makes the story stronger. Could you buy individual products? Of course. But the beauty of Scalp Therapy is understanding how each step works with the next. Bask & Lather has taken what can be a complicated category and made the routine surprisingly easy to understand.

And there is another reason I like the launch. Shaina has built a successful hair-care company in an industry where Black women have historically been some of beauty’s most influential consumers while still fighting for greater ownership, shelf space, capital and visibility. Seeing a founder take that understanding of our hair, develop around a real consumer need and keep expanding her company deserves attention.

But a founder story can only take a product so far. Eventually, the product has to be good. This one is.

One thing I am not going to do after a wash-day test is promise long-term hair growth. That takes time. What I can tell you is how the system performed for me: a refreshed scalp, soft hair, moisture, manageability and a routine I would use again.

The BBF Verdict

What we tested: Bask & Lather Scalp Therapy Collection

What we loved: The scalp-first approach, the way the products work as one routine and the balance between cleansing and moisture.

The standout: The Scalp Soothing Pre-Shampoo. Adding hydration and slip before cleansing makes the rest of wash day make a lot more sense.

Best for: Anyone dealing with buildup, dryness or simply wanting to take scalp care more seriously.

Would I use it again? Yes.

Does it pass The BBF Test? Easily.
