The gel that lives on every braider’s station just got small enough for your purse, your gym bag and your carry-on. Kaleidoscope Hair Products has launched a new 1.75 oz packette of its Kaleidoscope x Da Brat SoSo Slick Braid & Grip Gel, sold exclusively at more than 6,600 Dollar General stores nationwide and listed online at DollarGeneral.com.

Da Brat announced the drop on Instagram this week with a video shot in front of a Dollar General sign, packettes in both hands, telling followers that not even airport security can keep them from laying their edges. Her caption sums up the pitch: the same slick fans already love, “now small enough to take EVERYWHERE!”

Same formula, smaller size

The packette carries the same formula as the full size: ginger, manuka honey, oat milk and flaxseed, with no sulfates, no parabens, no alcohol and no animal testing. Dollar General’s listing positions it as a strong, long-lasting grip for braids, twists, locs, wigs, weaves, ponytails and sleek styles, without flaking, residue or crunch. In other words, the full edge control and braiding job in a size that fits a back pocket.

The founder behind the formula

Kaleidoscope belongs to Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart, a former New Orleans hairstylist who launched the brand in 2014, selling bottles out of her kitchen and the trunk of her car and documenting every step on Instagram. She left the salon chair in 2017 to run the company full time, and Biz New Orleans reported that the line had earned $20 million in sales within its first five years.

Kaleidoscope’s best sellers include Miracle Drops and SoSo Slick. The gel comes from the Kaleidoscope x Da Brat Styling Collection, the six-piece protective styling line Dupart created with her wife, the Grammy-nominated rapper and actress Da Brat. That collection sold out in six minutes when it launched, and SoSo Slick has since grown into one of the brand’s top sellers, stocked at Walmart, Amazon and beauty supply stores and expanded into a 16 oz size. The new packette takes the hero product in the opposite direction.

Why a smaller size is a big move

For founders, the move is a lesson in format. Shrinking a hero product lowers the cost of trying it, turns it into an easy add at the register, and gives a brand a reason to win shelf space in a new retail channel without developing a new formula. Dollar General calls itself America’s neighborhood general store, and an exclusive there puts a Black-owned textured hair brand in front of shoppers well beyond the big-city beauty supply strip.

Same slick, a smaller packette, and 6,600 more places to find it.
